OUR STORY

Hawthorn Leisure was set up in 2014 to develop a modern day pub company with an energetic, people focused culture. Since then, we have harnessed the experience and knowledge of some of the leading people in the industry, to ensure we only buy great pubs, with lots of potential.

Our portfolio of 298 pubs reflects our individual style, from local community pubs, to sports bars, town centre hubs and idyllic country inns – we have it all.

Since our inception, we are delighted to have been recognised across many awards and have won the West Midlands SME business of the year, as well as West Midlands finance team of the year. We have also been finalists in the Publican Awards, Pub Company of the Year (up to 500 sites) category, which was a huge achievement after just four years of trading.

In 2018 we were acquired by leading property investor, NewRiver and together, are continuing to build positive relationships and successful businesses for our Partners.

Our aim is to grow with operators who have the ambition to succeed and offer support through investment, training and developing concepts. If you win, we win!

June 2014 - Hawthorn Leisure was established

May 2014 – Hawthorn Leisure acquires 275 Greene King pubs

April 2016 – Hawthorn Leisure acquires 11 JD Wetherspoon pubs

November 2017 – Hawthorn Leisure win West Midlands finance team of the year

November 2017 – Hawthorn Leisure win West Midlands SME Business of the Year

December 2017 – Hawthorn Leisure is announced as a finalist for the Publican Awards Pub Company of the Year (up to 500 sites)

May 2018 – Hawthorn Leisure is acquired by NewRiver REIT

Gerry Carroll - CEO

Gerry Carroll - Our leader. Gerry cut his teeth in managed houses, working with some of the most successful and leading brands across the country including Warner Bros and Whitbread. He’s developed successful partnerships in the leased and tenanted sector and his passion for the business is second to none. He loves skiing, enjoys time with his family and when he’s not working with pubs, he’s visiting them. Say no more.

Mark McGinty - MD of Operations

If you want the measure of Mark’s determination and commitment, pop down to his local gym at 6am most mornings (except post-party days)! Forever driven to improve retail standards in the pub sector, JD Wetherspoon gained from his experience for 17 years, before he joined Enterprise Inns. Now leading operations at Hawthorn Leisure, you’ll find him out and about looking for ways to make our pubs the best they can be. A Manchester United fan - there’s a chink in everyone’s armour!

Matt Ward – CFO

Matt is the numbers man, keeping our finances in check with a ‘spend a pound, spend it wisely’ ethos. He’s a guru at transforming businesses, having experience across lots of sectors – retail, motor and even funeral services - and with a love of good food, entertainment and a decent pint, Hawthorn Leisure’s definitely a place he can unleash his passions! A keen runner, he's chasing more than a good time, keeping himself fit so he has the energy and enthusiasm for both our teams and his family, who he’s with when we’re not benefitting from his open, honest and sage opinions!

Edward Little - Property Director

Ed's our property guru, having worked with restaurants and pubs over the last 10 years, forming great relationships with agents and operators alike. If he’s not at work he’s either in the gym or booking his next holiday! Our regular jet setter, he loves his holidays and even reckons he got some of his tips from staying with Ms Judith Chalmers herself!

Jennie Tucker - Head of Marketing

Jenn is a marketing whizz, driven and passionate about enhancing the customer experience. It was love at first sight with pubs and restaurants; she’s been working in them since graduating. Jenn can usually be found ‘spec testing’ food and drink to ensure perfection and inspire new brands (well that’s what she tells us!) When she’s not out scouting for the latest trends, Jenn loves to travel - annual leave has to be spent with an adventure!

Andrew Parker - Operations Director

The Retailer who got driven to pubs! After a 14-year career in food retail, Andy decided it was time to go back to his roots. With a passion for pubs and developing great performing teams, the opportunity to lead the Southern half of the Hawthorn Leisure’s Operations team was never going to be passed up.

Daryl Kelly – Head of Financial Control & Reporting

Always up for a challenge, it seems the twenty years in senior finance roles, working with most of the big pub companies wasn’t enough for this ultra-marathon runner (yes 31.5 miles!) It was the attraction of a young company with bags of growth and ambition that brought him to Hawthorn Leisure in 2016, and of course the fact that he loves a good pub. Daryl loves travelling with his family and making memories – just like his lifelong football club Leicester City F.C. did (once!)

Chris Beck – Commercial Director

A dream job for many, Chris is our class act buyer with over twenty years’ experience in drinks sales and purchasing, for big pub companies in the UK and Australia. He’s now responsible for making sure our Partners get the product they need. A keen cyclist, rugby player and expending more energy running after the kids, he also takes his role of ‘market research’ in UK pubs very seriously!
