A Better Business Approach

We got together in 2014 to develop a modern day pub company with an energetic culture. We harnessed the experience and knowledge of some of the leading senior people in the industry. We bought pubs. Great pubs. Pubs with lots of potential.

These businesses, over hundreds of individual character and style, are spread across the country, from local community pubs to sports bars, and town centre venues to idyllic country inns.

Our aim is to grow, in partnership, with operators who have the ambition to succeed. We invest, we train, we develop ideas and concepts. We talk, but more importantly, we act. Swiftly.

“Good relationships foster good business”

At Hawthorn, we pride ourselves in taking a fresh approach. We are quick to act. Willing to give anything a go. Our in-depth knowledge and close team enable us to make quick decisions. We welcome change and we relish the fact that we express the personal touch. After all, good relationships foster good business.

People – Our passion. Always at the forefront of any decision or activity are our employees, partners, suppliers and customers. We treat people like people, not numbers. Being part of our extended team is like being family to us.

Property – Our Asset. We love taking a pub and turning it into a great pub. Through our investment programme, working with great designers and entrepreneurs we sprinkle the magic, matching the right partner to the right pub, and the right pub to the right community. Harnessing the energy, expertise and passion makes for a great investment.

Proposition – Our Knowledge. We combine the skills of our support teams with the knowledge of the local area to create a template for success. Ensuring the location has the right offer and our business partner is equipped with the right tools, our propositions go from strength to strength.

Our senior team move mountains. No challenge is too big. The combined experience and knowledge make for a successful palette.

Des and Trish Sweeney, discovered their dream pub, The Cross Keys, Epperstone. A beautiful country pub, situated in the valley of the Dover Beck, which has been turned into a diner’s paradise, thanks to the joint investment of Hawthorn and the local couple. Having previously been, by Royal Appointment, cooking for the Queen, Des brought his extensive catering skills to the partnership. This combined with the management skills of Trish and the experience and knowledge of the Hawthorn team has created a recipe for success.

“The Cross Keys is a dream come true. We now operate our local pub; support the community and have created jobs in the village. The partnership works for us ”

Winning together

Gerry Carroll - CEO

Gerry Carroll - Our Leader. Gerry cut his teeth in managed houses; worked with some of the most successful and leading brands across the country. He’s worked developing successful partnerships in the lease and tenanted sector and his passion for the business is second to none. He loves skiing; enjoys time with his family and when he’s not working with pubs, he’s visiting them. Say no more.

“One finds limits by pushing them”

Mark McGinty - MD of Operations

If you want the measure of Mark’s determination and commitment, pop down to his local gym at 6am most mornings (except post party days)! Forever driven to improve retail standards in the pub sector, JD Wetherspoons gained from his experience for 17 years, then onto Enterprise Inns. Now leading operations at Hawthorn Leisure, you’ll find him out and about looking for ways to make our pubs the best they can be. A Manchester United fan though, there’s always a chink in everyone’s armour!

“Only put off until tomorrow what you are willing to die having left undone”

Matt Ward – CFO

Matt is the numbers man, keeping our finances in check with a ‘spend a pound, spend it wisely’ ethos. He’s a guru at transforming businesses, having experience across lots of sectors – retail, motor, even funeral services, and with a love of good food, entertainment and a decent pint too, Hawthorn’s definitely a place he can unleash his passions! A keen runner, he's chasing more than a good time, keeping himself fit so he has the energy and enthusiasm for both our teams and his family, who he’s with when we’re not benefitting from his open, honest and sage opinions!

“There are no secrets to success. It is the result of preparation, hard work, and learning from failure"

Edward Little - Property Director

Ed's our property guru, having worked with restaurants and pubs over the last 10 years, forming great relationships with agents and operators alike. If he’s not at work he’s either in the gym or booking his next holiday! Our regular jet setter, he loves his holidays and even reckons he got some of his tips from staying with Ms Judith Chalmers herself!

“If plan A didn’t work, the alphabet has 25 more letters. Stay cool.”

Jennie Tucker - Head of Marketing

Jenn is a marketing whizz, driven and passionate about enhancing the customer experience. It was love at first sight for pubs and restaurants; she’s been working in them since graduating. Jenn can usually be found ‘spec testing’ food and drink to ensure perfection and inspire new brands. (Well that’s what she tells us)! When she’s not out scouting for the latest trends, Jenn loves to travel - annual leave has to be spent with an adventure or holiday!

“Be the reason someone smiles today.”

Andrew Parker - Operations Director

The Retailer who got driven to pubs! After a 14-year career in food retail, Andy decided it was time to go back to his roots. With a passion for pubs and developing great performing teams, the opportunity to lead the Southern half of the Hawthorn Operations team was never going to be passed up.

"Believe you can and you're halfway there”

Daryl Kelly – Head of Financial Control & Reporting

Always up for a challenge, it seems the twenty years in senior finance roles working with most of the big pub companies isn’t always enough for the ultra marathon runner Daryl (yes 31.5 miles)! It was the attraction of a young company with bags of growth and ambition that brought him to Hawthorn in 2016, and of course he loves a good pub. Daryl loves travelling with his family and making memories – just like his lifelong football club Leicester did (once)!

“The best thing about memories is making them”

Chris Beck – Commercial Director

A dream job for many, Chris is our class act buyer with over twenty years experience in drinks sales and purchasing for big pub companies in the UK and Australia, he’s now responsible for making sure our Partners get the product they need. A keen cyclist, rugby player and expending more energy running after the kids, he also takes his role of ‘market research’ in UK pubs very seriously!

“I’m a glass half full person always on the hunt for the other half”
